Is that…Real?【SONY】
Any PlayStation game purchased digitally after March's sytem update will reportedly now require an internet connection once every 30 days to validate the license . Realy?? WTF SONY… What do you guys think about this? Offline play is definitely a must, just like with Steam and PC games. This is definitely a step backward. I was really looking forward to the PS6 Portable… but with this, people who buy downloadable games won’t be able to play anywhere they don’t have a network connection… Well, let’s set aside the whole “don’t live or work in places like that” argument for now. Seriously, what’s gotten into you, Sony?
No way. That's straight up terrible.
Seriously? Once every 30 days? What is this, 2010 DRM redux.
They probably want to stop account sharing and piracy, but doing it this heavy-handed will piss off legit buyers.
Offline play is a hard requirement for me. If this sticks, I'm buying physical or switching.
>>4 yeah anti-piracy excuse, but there's better ways. This is just obnoxious.
Imagine you're on a trip with no wifi and can't play a single-player game you paid for. Absolute joke.
If their servers go down for maintenance and you can't validate? RIP your library.
PS6 Portable looks dead in the water if this is enforced on portable devices.
>>9 maybe they can cache licenses on device, but then why bother with the 30-day ping...
I work in places with shit reception. This would literally make digital purchases useless for me sometimes.
Also smells like a push to tie people to their online subscription services. Monetize everything.
Counterpoint: companies need ways to protect digital purchases. Still, the UX here is garbage.
Anyone seen the official patch notes? This sounds like rumor but it's been in reports for a bit.
If true, expect a surge in people buying physical copies and secondhand market hopping.
Quick lifehack if it's real: make sure you connect at least once a month? Tedious but possible.
That 'once-a-month' window is a ticking time bomb. Miss one trip and suddenly you're locked out.
This disproportionately hurts rural gamers, older users, and anyone traveling for work.
I used to defend Sony's choices, but this would be a dealbreaker. Can't trust them with my purchases.
Anyone checked if physical games are exempt? Because that's where I'll migrate if so.
Question: does this affect single-player offline-only titles? Or just ones with online components?
Longer thought: If they implement this they need robust fallback. Allow an 'offline license token' that lasts longer, or at least a clear offline activation flow. Doing a stealth change with no options will blow up in their face PR-wise.
Haha imagine inflight gaming: "Sorry sir your game needs validation, please connect to our $30 wifi".
People acting like this is the end of the world — well, it's pretty close for a lot of legitimate users.
If it goes live, I'm waiting for the first headline about someone's game library being bricked because Sony's servers glitched.
Has anyone thought of VPNing or something weird to fake a ping? This'll just breed hacks and workarounds.
For now: don't panic, wait for official word. But also start backing up your receipts and preferring physical if you care about offline play.
Sony, come on. You made PlayStation for the players, not for telemetry and monthly check-ins.
I guess we'll see a lot of "I told you so" threads when people actually get locked out. Mark my words.
Let's not freak out fully yet, but yeah — terrible move if true. Keep an eye on official channels and consumer rights groups.
